Did you know that we watch a whopping twenty-eight hours of TV each week? That means we spend one thousand six hundred and eighty minutes sitting in front of the TV a week. We sit through over twenty thousand commercials each year. Yikes! This is not good for the fact that teen obesity is on the rise. It's no wonder! We just have to sit in front of the TV and we become fat from lack of physical activity and excessive snacking.
After all, most of the commercials entice us to eat those yummy high fat and high calorie snacks. Watching TV can be boring, so we often eat because we're bored. We often eat in front of the TV because it becomes a habit. Like buying popcorn and a soda at the movies, we feel we must have something to pop into our mouths while watching TV like a zombie.
Watching a lot of television is bad for kids because of the exposure to bad violence and even sex. Watching too much of this causes children to become callused to violence. They say that children will see close to ten thousand murderers on TV by the time they leave elementary school. This is not normal or healthy.
Another reason watching too much TV is bad is that it causes us to become overweight. We become overweight from lack of moving around. Watching TV all the time encourages snacking, whether we are hungry or not. Not only does too much TV cause us to sit around and do nothing and not only does it expose us to too much violence and sex it also exposes us to too many profane words. In an ideal world people will not use curse words. More children these days tend to use profane words because they learned it from a TV show or movie.
Many parents do not censor what their children watch and less so with teenagers. Parents often feel that teens should know better and lift any restrictions on them thinking they will choose not to watch it. But the truth is teens are curious and maybe even more so than children. Parents really need to censor what all their children watch, even the ones who are teens.
Statistics show that an average teen in America will spend around six hundred more hours a year watching TV. Many became added to certain shows. Television addiction is a real condition. Children can have a better time not being addicted to it but for adults and teens it's a strong addiction.
The number one reason it's so bad is how it causes us to exercise less. We know that exercise is healthy for us, that it helps us to be less overweight. And especially since teen obesity is on the rise it's more important than ever for parents to limit their time in front of the tube. Instead of grabbing the remote and sitting on the couch, grab a pair of sneakers and go outside. Walk or run. Play a sport. Take up gym activities. Lift weights. Swim. Be active. Be healthy. Feel better because being active means losing weight, sleeping better, feeling better.
