Get a bandage and ensure that the surface is dry before application. Stretch the skin out to ensure that there is a tight fit. The bandage helps to repel any dirt and germs entering your wound and infecting it. After a few days if it has not fully healed, it should have formed a scab and it is now safe to remove that bandage. A common habit that most people have is to peel the scab but that is the number 1 cause of scars. Leave the scab as it is a form of protection for your wound and leave it to drop on it's own.

Deep cuts
Deep cuts are more difficult to handle because most of time your skin will not be able to heal itself because of the large opening. Most large cuts will result in a scar but you can reduce the risk of it by following these steps. If the cut is really large and there is a clear split in the tissue. You may have to get stitches (100% scar). However, if you deduce that it is not that huge, use a sterilized bandage or use your fingers first to close the opening. this will help to either stop or reduce the bleeding by quite a bit. Hopefully by about 15 minutes the platelets and clotting activators which are released will stop the bleeding. If not, you will probably have to get to the clinic to get some patching or stitches to close the wound. But if it has stopped bleeding, leave it for another 20-30 minutes for the bond to be stronger.

After 20-30 minutes, remove the bandage carefully and wash the area with antiseptic soap and water and replace the bandage with a clean one. for the first few days, try to minimize facial movements to reduce pressure on the area and check and clean your wound daily to remove any perspiration build up. To speed up your recovery, use some scar gels to increase the rate of recovery as well and like shallow cuts, DO NOT remove the scab before it starts to fall off.

Several people do some of their best work late in their lives. Many famous people accomplished some amazing feats when they were in the older part of their lives. The following are a few of those people and their accomplishments.

Edgar Rice Burroughs – American Writer

Edgar Rice Burroughs is best known for writing Tarzan and other science fiction novels. He wrote many novels incorporating life on mars including John Carter which was recently made into a film. What very few people know is that at age 66 Burroughs became the oldest war correspondent ever. Burroughs joined the army shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and thought in World War II until the end of the war.

Barbara McLinctock – American Scientist

Barbara McLintock won the Noble Prize in 1983 for Physiology or Medicine. She became the first woman to win the award unshared and she did it at age of 81.

Sir Francis Chichester – English Sailor

At the age of 52 Sir Francis Chichester sailed around the world alone in a 53-foot boat. The boat was intended to be manned by a six-man crew but Sir Chichester piloted the boat on his own. Shortly after this feat he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

JRR Tolkien – English Writer

JRR Tolkien is known for writing The Lord of the Rings books among other works of literature. He makes our list because he was 62 years old when he published The Lord of the Rings series.

Miles Davis – Jazz Musician

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musician Miles Davis performed many concerts and sold a lot of albums in his career. However his last final album was performed by him at age 65 just a few weeks before he died.

Noah Webster – Lexicographer

A lexicographer is one that edits and compiles dictionaries. Noah Webster completed the American Dictionary of the English Language when he was 67 years old.

Ed Whitlock – Canadian Long-Distance Runner

Ed Whitlock became the oldest person to run a standard marathon in under three hours at age 69. Whitlock's official time is 2:52:47.

John Glenn – Astronaut

John Glenn was the oldest astronaut recruited with NASA's first initial recruitment for astronauts. He was 40 years old at the time. Glenn was the first American to orbit the earth when he was 44 but the accomplishment that he is most known for is being the oldest man to go to space. In 1998 at age 77, Glenn flew on the Discovery shuttle to earn this honor.

Asa Long – US Checkers Champion

Asa Long became won his first checkers world title in 1934 that would not be his last. Long won the 1984 United States Championship becoming the oldest person to win a US checkers championship. Long continued his career and was a grandmaster for 70 years.

Michelangelo – Italian Sculptor

Michelangelo designed and painted several works of art through his lifetime. This continued all the way up to his last few years. He created the architectural plans for the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli at age 88.

Paul Spangler – US Navy Surgeon

Paul Spangler retired from being a US Navy Surgeon and began the sport of running. During his running career he ran in 14 marathons finishing his 14th at age 92.

Harry Bernstein – Author

Harry Bernstein began writing his only published book The Invisible Wall when he was 93 years old. He began writing the book to cope with the loss of wife. The book was published when he was 96 years old.

Very few people feel comfortable talking about certain health issues, like constipation. They may feel it is a private and personal issue that should not be discussed with others. Ironically, almost everyone has faced this problem at one time in their lives but are still embarrassed and shy to talk about it. Constipation can be painful and frustrating and it will be very beneficial if we know how to prevent it.

What is constipation?

Some people believe that constipation occurs when one can not have at least one bowel movement everyday. This, however, is not true. You have constipation when your own bowel movements become less frequent and more difficult to pass. You may also feel bloated and experience pain in your abdomen area. There are many reasons for getting constipation.

Common causes of constipation

It is commonly known that not eating enough fibrous food or drinking sufficient water can cause constipation. This is because fiber promotes bowel movements and drinking sufficient water will prevent dehydration and reduce the absorption of water from the stools. Another main culprit of constipation is not going to the toilet when we feel the urge to do so. Many of us are guilty of this especially when we are out in public or at work or school. We tend to try to hold on until we are home. However, this is bad for our bodies as the longer we delay going to the toilet, the harder it will become for us to do so.

When we change our daily routines, like when we travel, it will affect our bowel movements as well. Traveling may lead to us eating at different times and having different types of food. We also sleep at different times, especially in countries with a big time difference. This will affect when we use the toilet and increase the risk of constipation.

Who is more likely to have constipation?

Constipation can happen to anyone and it probably affects almost everyone through their lifetime. However, it affects children, women and the elderly more than anyone else. Children and the elderly are more likely to eat less fibrous food and drink less water. The elderly also exercise much less. Women are more likely to have constipation due to pregnancy where there are hormonal changes and the uterus tends to compress the intestine.

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, at least 70% of people over the age of 65 will require some long term care services at some point in their lives. , Adult Day Care, Assisted Living Care, or Nursing Home Care.

You are at risk of losing your life savings if you do not properly prepare your estate before you or a loved one falls ill. The average annual nursing home cost in the US is $ 77,745 per person per year, and the average nursing home stay in the US is 30 months. ** Do the math, and the cost per person over that time period would average $ 194,363!

I can not afford that. And, if you are like me, you probably do not want to be a financial burden on your family as you age. In fact, you may be more worried about being a financial burden than dying.

The 2012 survey conducted by Genworth Financial showed that death was of least concern (10%). More worrisome were fears of living in a nursing home (25%), and depleting life savings (12%). Residents live independently, but have access to service professionals on an as-needed basis. These communities are designed to provide residents with assistance with basic needs, such as bathing, grooming, and dressing, and administering medicines.

A primary advantage of living in an assisted living community is the social environment and interaction with other residents and with the staff.

The third Option , of course, is moving into a nursing home. This would be for patients who require care at a much higher level, and if needed, care around the clock. Staff would include skilled nurses 24 hours per day, as well as diagnostic services like lab tests, xrays, and EKG readings.
